May 2008 - Nutrition Center welcomes Dr. Angela Liese as the new Director for the Center!
May 2008 - Congratulations to Drs Susan Steck and Katrina Walsemann on your recently funded Nutrition Center Seed Grant proposals!
Spring 2008 - Nutrition Center research to be presented at June American Diabetes Association Annual meeting, the 28th Scientific Sessions. Research includes work by students and post-doctoral fellows including Andrey Bortsov, Archana Pande, and Anke Guether. Faculty include Angela Liese, Andrew Lawson, and Dwayne Porter.
April 2008 - Nutrition Center welcomes new Affiliated Scholars! The Center Steering Group invites three faculty to join the growing group of Nutrition Center Affiliated Scholars: Anwar Merchant, Robert Moran, and Susan Steck. Dr Merchant was the first hire of the Child Obesity FEI (Epid/Bios slot), in which the Nutrition Center serves as the facilitating department of the search. Dr Merchant is housed at the Nutrition Center, and was recently funded a USC ROP through the Nutrition Center, to work on a SEARCH ancillary study. Dr Moran has been involved in the Nutrition Center for several years as our biostatistician and IT manager. Dr Moran recently received a faculty appointment in Epid/Bios. He is still involved in Nutrition Center grants, and currently serves as PI for Look AHEAD and DPP OS - both Nutrition Center grants. Dr Moran also has a % effort designated to Nutrition Center needs. Dr Steck's research program has evolved to be more aligned with the Nutrition Center's mission and has expressed an interest to collaborate. Also, this past year she presented at the Nutrition Center Seminar Series on "Meat Intake, DNA Repair Genes and Cancer Risk". WELCOME!
January 31, 2008 - Dr. Jihong Liu, Nutrition Center Affiliate Scholar receives funding for her proposal "Long-Term Effect Of Social Environments On Activity Patterns And Overweight Among U.S. Adolescents", submitted to DHHS Health Resources and Services Administration. This study was a result of pilot work funded by a Nutrition Center Seed Grant, "Health Effects of Physical Activity During Pregnancy on Overweight Women and Their Offspring".
January 1, 2008 - Dr. Angela Liese begins serving as Interim Director for the Center for Research in Nutrition and Health Disparities. This is after former director, Dr. Beth Mayer-Davis accepts a faculty appointment at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Dr Angela Liese's paper based on the Nutrition Center seed grant was published in November in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association (Liese AD, Weis K, Pluto D, Smith E, Lawson A. Food store types, availability and cost of foods in a rural environment. JADA 2007; 107:1916-23.)
